Description

Still-Life Drawings and Paintings

For children entering grades 6–8

How often do you think about the objects around us, in terms of subject matter for art? Since the 16th century—arguably before then—people have been making paintings depicting flowers, foods, and other objects. There’s lots of symbolism in those old paintings! Think about the difference between a bowl of fresh fruit, and a party spread on a table that’s been picked at and half-eaten. Even different types of flowers carry different meanings. Think about what symbolism is embedded in modern objects. What messages will you convey in your artwork? In this class, students will explore several styles of still-life art as they make their own drawings and paintings. We will draw from nature, out in the garden, and students are invited to bring in objects of their own as well. We will talk about proportion, positive/negative space, and balance, as students conduct their observational studies and create their compositions.
