Shadow Play Puppetry Performances
For children entering grades 6–8
All over the world—from China to India to Europe to the Middle East to Australia, and in places in between and afar— and for thousands of years, people have been using shadows to tell stories. From Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, an ancient story about the importance of questioning and learning, to the short films produced by Chicago’s own Emmy-Award-winning collective Manual Cinema, storytelling with shadows truly transcends place and time, and is a universal method for creating and communicating. In this class, students go step by step through the process of making their own shadow puppet production. After a brief history primer, students will explore materials with a range of opacity, transparency, and color as they create their own characters and build a set. Using fables and folktales as inspiration, students will write an original story, then practice it before putting on a final show for a live audience!
