Introductory Marine Biology 

For children entering grades 6–8

More than 70 percent of the Earth's surface is covered by oceans and less than 5 percent of the ocean has been rigorously explored. But in that small percentage, scientists have discovered some amazing things. This course will be a brief dive into marine biology. To start, we will review the basics of ocean geography, cover plate tectonics, and discuss the chemical characteristics of water and salt water. Then students will spend the majority of the time exploring the most interesting examples of marine biodiversity, ranging from our shorelines and lakes to the deepest explored trenches. Students will explore lots of visual and interactive elements, such as wildlife videos, live streams of the deep sea, activities, and games. During the final class, we will talk about ocean conservation, ocean acidification, and global warming.
