Description

Introductory Marine Biology

For children entering grades 3–5

More than 70 percent of the Earth's surface is covered by oceans and less than 5 percent of that has been rigorously explored. But in that small percentage, scientists have discovered some amazing things. This class offers a brief dive into marine biology. To start, the course will review the basics of ocean geography, an introduction to marine geology, and discuss why water is so unique. Then the course will spend the majority of the time exploring the most interesting examples of marine biodiversity, ranging from our shorelines and lakes to the deepest explored trenches. The course will include lots of visual and interactive elements taking advantage of wildlife videos, live streams of the deep sea, activities, and games. The final class will talk about ocean conservation and global warming's impacts.
