Description

Hands-On Math

For children entering grades 1–2

Hands-On Math is a fun, creative course dedicated to exploring early mathematical concepts using a multisensory approach. Students will practice skip-counting by making “strings with wings,” learn fraction concepts by building with pattern blocks, fraction tiles, and clay, and create art projects using color-by-sum and color-by-difference (rather than simply color-by-number). Other activities include an introduction to coin counting with the board game Money Bags (always a class favorite!) and estimating, then calculating, a large quantity of objects by sorting into groups of five and ten. Each class begins with a story that explores a mathematical concept, such as Mission: Addition by Loreen Leedy and 365 Penguins by Jean-Luc Fromental. We will review basic addition and subtraction facts and discuss addition and subtraction with regrouping. This is the ideal class for a young mathematician who is in need of remedial math, as well as those students who need enrichment.
