Looking Beyond Words
For children entering grades 6–7
This class will focus on honing the analytical reading and writing skills your child will need as the class advances. Students now need to know how to “look beyond” the text; this includes the skills of analyzing a character’s thoughts and actions, determining the author’s purpose and point of view, identifying key literary elements within a text, and expressing different thoughts and ideas through critical writing. Progress monitoring will be implemented through the summer to track growth and understanding, and a variety of readings will be used: fiction and nonfiction passages, readers theater, poetry, and novel excerpts. As your child grows as a reader, they need to practice higher-level thinking skills; this class is designed to further introduce these skills and allow the students to practice them before the start of their academic year.
The class will cover the same content each session and we recommend only registering for this class one time.
