Introductory Marine Biology
For children entering grades 6–8
More than 70% of the Earth's surface is covered by oceans and less than 5% of the ocean has been rigorously explored. But in that 5% we have discovered some amazing things. This course will be a brief dive into marine biology. To start, the course will review the basics of ocean geography, cover plate tectonics, and discuss the chemical characteristics of water and salt water. Then the course will spend the majority of the time exploring the most interesting examples of marine biodiversity, ranging from our shorelines and lakes to the deepest explored trenches. The course will include lots of visual and interactive elements taking advantage of wildlife videos, live streams of the deep sea, activities, and games. The final class will talk about ocean conservation, ocean acidification, and global warming.
